    Description

Here is a very nice Sampson medal.  It is unnamed, and without clasp/suspenders but lots of visual appeal and a great one for display.
The date of the engagement (Santiago de Cuba) on the reverse is May 18th. There were 2 ships involved in this event. One was USS St.Louis, a Cruiser,  and the other USS Wompatuck, an Armed  tug.  St.Louis exchanged fire with Spanish shore batteries while searching for dragging and cutting the communications line between this port and Jamaica.  Since there were only 20 men aboard Wompatuck, it is likely this medal was originally presented to a sailor who served in USS St.Louis.
This is a  5 day auction.
