Span-Am War Era US Navy USN Sailor Flat Hat or Wool Uniform Cap - USS Southery Hat Ribbon - Size 7 - Nice Condition - RARE
Up for sale is an Original Span-Am War Era US Navy USN Sailor's Flat Hat or Wool Uniform Cap.  It has the USS Southery Hat Ribbon and the leather sweat band.  This example still has the chin strap, which are normally missing on most examples from this period.  No manufacturer markings.  It has the name of the sailor inside the cap F.E. Marnox.  No rips or tears, a few of moth nips on the top of the cap and around the undeside of the head band, see photos.  Some wear to the USS Southery Ribbon.  No tag is present, estimate at a size 7.  The cap is used, see photo's for condition.  A nice vintage WWII US Navy Cap in a small size.
There is a photo of the USS Southery (IX-26).  It was a steamer that performed coastal patrols up and down the Atlantic costs from Boston to Jamaica.  After the war she was converted to a prison ship at Boston Harbor and later move to Portsmouth NH.  During 1917, as the US was preparing to enter WWI she transported newly enlisted Navy Recruits from Great Lakes to Portsmouth.  During the remainder of 1917 and through out 1918 she again was a prison ship.  She was later decommissioned in 1933.
