    Description

Wonderful 2-page (4 sided) letter dated May 30, 1898, written by “Herbert” from Camp Thomas,
Chickamauga, Georgia. Great content, including a brief description of the camp, “hotter than the
first chapter of hell,” brief details of trip from Pennsylvania (had “one hell of a time coming
down here”), water supply bad, perhaps will have to march to the coast, many weak, regiment
used to be called “fighting sixteenth but now called starving sixteenth” and “not fed enough to
keep a chicken alive.” Brutally honest soldier letter. Written in pencil, has fold marks but
overall good condition and quite readable. Thanks for looking.
