    Description

    Part of my great-uncle's collection.
Description: 1890s General Dewey 1" Cello Celluloid Pin by the Whitehead and Hoag Company of Newark, New Jersey.
The patent date on the back of the pin is 1896 so this celluloid cello pin was perhaps issued in commemoration of Admiral George Dewey's historic victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
"George Dewey (1837-1917) was an Admiral of the U.S. Navy and remains the only individual to have achieved the rank.
Dewey became a national icon after he led an attack on Manila Bay, sinking the entire Spanish Pacific fleet while suffering only minor casualties. Dewey's victory at Manila Bay was widely lauded in the United States, and he was subsequently promoted to Admiral of the Navy and celebrated through the production of various medals, tokens, and ephemera."
